The Art of Kicking Butt

When I was younger, you could say I was quite the athlete. I danced 5 days a week for several hours and did karate. I was nimble and flexible! But then college came by; up went the amount of junk food I ate, down went the amount of exercise I did.

As I explained in the ABOUT ME page, I am a journalism student and that means I am learning all the techniques of videography and reporting. So for my video project I decided to record a capoeira class.  Capoeira is a brazilian type of martial arts is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music. As part of the deal to let me record their class, they had me be part of the beginner’s class; I. ALMOST. DIED.
I was either always almost getting kicked in the face, or kicking someone else in the face. Even the warm-up exercises were challenging, so either I am really out of shape or it is quite the challenging sport. It is surprisingly diffiicult. Take a look!

      1. Around Sao Paulo its limited to gyms. You see kids walking down the street in their whites. Along the coast they do it on the beach boulevards, complete with the musicians. It’s pretty good. see link. The second link is to the basic music popularized by Banda Eva… the S-Jing, S-Jing.

  1. Wow, a standing flip. Capoeira is no joke. I think it would take me quite a while to work up the courage to attend a class. :) Good for you!
